Textbooks:

Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals (2nd Edition Updated), M.Morris Mano & Charles R. Kime, Prentice Hall, 2001.

This is the same text used in 62/74:264 Digital Computer Fundamentals. The Computer Organization course will cover chapters 6 through 12 with reference to earlier chapters as necessary.

Information from various web sites will be incorporated into the course material. Follow the links from the main page for this course.

Marking Scheme

  • Term tests 2 @ 15%; October 10 and November 14.
  • Assignments totalling 30%
  • Final exam 40%

Topics

The course will cover the following topics.

  • Memory and Memory Systems
  • Programmable Logic Technologies
  • Register transfers and datapaths
  • Sequencing and Control
  • Instruction set architecture
  • CPU design, mostly concentrating on RISC designs
  • I/O and communication

The presentation in this course will stay close to that in the text with forays into other areas as indicated by class interest.

In addition, we will be using the Xilinx software that comes with the textbook to practice some of the design principles.
